Dubrovnik Travel & Transport Information

The Adriatic highway (E65) goes to Dubrovnik from Split in the north and Montenegro in the south. The highway from the Split side is now complete to Vrgorac and the journey is now one hour shorter. Taxi transportation services are available in Dubrovnik on your arrival, whether it is by aeroplane, cruise boat or ferry.

As the old town is wholly pedestrianised and small, it is easy enough to get around on foot. Some streets, however, are a bit steep.

Getting to Dubrovnik

By Plane

Dubrovnik airport is situated 20 km to the south of the city. Flights from Zagreb cost approximately 60 Euros for a round trip. This includes taxes.

The national airline is Croatian Airlines, with Dubrovnik being one of its main airports. Several flights operate both domestically (many times daily to Zagreb; seasonal flights to Osijek, Zadar and Pula) and internationally to Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and the UK, and many others during the summer season. Other airlines include Aer Lingus, Hapag Lloyd Express, Estonian Air, SN Brussels Airlines and British Airways.

Taxis are available at the airport but they are expensive. You can book airport transfers with our agency for much cheaper. There is a reliable bus service to the Old City with halts in the Old City at Pile Gate or the bus station in Gruž.

By Train

Trains do not run to Dubrovnik but you can take a train to Split and then catch a bus to Dubrovnik. The bus and train stations in Split are next to each other on the quay.

You can also take the train from Sarajevo or Mostar, which goes to Ploče on the Croatian coast, and then travel the last leg of the journey by bus. The trains are not usually crowded and the scenery is spectacular. Ploče is the closest railway station to Dubrovnik.

By Car

The journey from Split is a scenic one along the coastal road. You will pass through small, old-world villages and other tourist spots. The journey takes much longer than expected during the summer months. It may look like a short trip on the map but can take up to six hours. You can now do half of this journey by the highway from Zagreb – Split – Vrgorac and then continue on the costal road from Ploće to Dubrovnik, making the travel time much shorter.

By Bus

The new bus station is situated in Kantafig, in the northern part of the city. Both domestic and international departures are available, as are services to the airport. If you are already on the Dalmatian coast you can take a bus directly from Spilt to Dubrovnik. Buses ply every hour and the fare is more than 100 kn, depending on the operator. The journey takes four and a half hours. There are international services to cities like Trieste in Italy, as well as daily services to Mostar and Sarajevo in Bosnia, and Herceg Novi and Kotor in Montenegro.

You will have to pay a separate fee for luggage on all intercity buses.

By Boat

Jadrolinija runs ferries from Rijeka, with stops at Split, Hvar and Korčula on the way. Booking a cabin is a good option as travelling time is up to 20 hours. The restaurant serves decent and reasonably priced food but do remember that the 22% tax is not included in the menu. There is no entertainment provided so carry a good book or bring along some company. However, the journey is beautiful and you can pass the time simply gazing at the natural beauty of the lovely coast.

The ferries run at night to and from Bari, Italy, but this is not recommended as either the vibrations from the engine or the boat swaying from side to side (due to the high winds) will prevent you from sleeping.

Getting Around Dubrovnik

Walking is the best way of getting around the old town and surrounding areas.

By Bus

If you are not staying in the Old Town it is easy to catch any bus as almost all of them lead to the Old Town. It is of course better to check a timetable of bus arrivals and departures to ensure that you board the right bus!

Car Rental

Several well known car rental companies like National, Budget, Avis and Sixt have a presence at the Dubrovnik airport. You can also book car rental with our agency before your arrival.
