Dubrovnik is a paradise for food lovers. There are a variety of restaurants in the Old Town, most of which offer the same kind of food, which comprises of local seafood and meat dishes. The food at these restaurants is fresh and of a good quality. There are a few wood-fired pizzerias as well. Keep in mind that Dubrovnik, more than the rest of Croatia, is conscious of its reputation as a tourist favourite and the prices reflect this as well.

Food & Cuisine in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik has excellent restaurants. Most provide the same cuisine, which is the local seafood along with a few grilled meat dishes. However, since the food is fresh and cooked well you will not mind the simple menu. The busiest restaurants are found in Dubrovnik Old Town along the street called Preko, as well as along and off Siroka Ulica Street in the Old Town. Many restaurants close during winter (off season) but there are still many that stay open throughout the year, so you can always sample the local food.

All Dubrovnik restaurants offer local dishes such as grilled fresh fish, rizot (seafood risotto), buzara (mussels in wine, garlic and tomato sauce), as well as grilled meat and pizza. The locally caught seafood is especially good.

Drinking in Dubrovnik

The most popular alcoholic drink in Croatia is home made rakija. This is a fruit brandy produced after distilling fermented fruit. Common flavours include sljivovica (made from plums), "loza" (made from grapes), and "orahovica" (made with walnuts). They are all quite strong and like most hard liquor are enjoyed by some and not by others.

There are several superb local wines from both the Peljesac Peninsula and Konavle and these are a good option as they are cheaper than soft drinks like Coca-Cola.

There are many cafes in the Old Town as well as the city. Prices vary depending on the location. Those located on the Stradun are the most expensive but you are paying for the setting as well. The cafes or café bars also serve a range of drinks throughout the day.

Dubrovnik is not London or New York, and things tend to end quite early, especially in the off season. However, there are a few bars in the Old Town which sometimes offer live music. Pubs are busy in the summer when the Dubrovnik Summer Festival is held in late July/August.

Local Food

Dalmatian cuisine, as the local food is known, is typical Mediterranean cuisine which is mainly seafood - red snapper, squid, cuttlefish, octopus and shellfish. Pork, lamb and veal are the popular meat dishes. Every restaurant has a special risotto dish. Restaurants are found all over the city but the Prijeko (a main road that runs parallel to the Stradun) is always full in the summer.

There are only a few international restaurants in Dubrovnik. The Hilton Imperial, Dubrovnik Palace, Grand Villa Argentina and the Excelsior have restaurants and a variety of cuisine on offer. However, all do serve the local seafood and other specialties in a more stylish, sophisticated (and more expensive) setting. In classic Mediterranean style, the openings hours are not fixed; if business is slow the restaurant may close early, and if business is good, it may close later.
