Dobrodošli & Welcome to Dubrovnik!
Known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic", Dubrovnik is an UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the southern coast of Croatia. With steep limestone cliffs behind it and the magnificent blue Adriatic sea in front, this perfectly preserved treasure is surrounded by strong medieval walls, which also house a number of renaissance and baroque churches, palaces and quaint Dubrovnik hotels. It is a popular destination, visited by travellers from around the world for its stunning views and its beautiful Old Town.
Lord Byron was so besotted with Dubrovnik that he paid it a tribute and called it the "Pearl of the Adriatic". George Bernard Shaw was also quick to praise this enchanting city and said that ‘those who seek paradise on earth should seek it in Dubrovnik'.
Dubrovnik is one of the most picturesque towns in the Mediterranean, a preferred destination and the crowning glory of Croatia. In peak season the city is full of tourists and cruise ship passengers. Several European citizens are now investing in property in this Adriatic coastal city. Nine luxurious Dubrovnik hotels (out of the fifteen in Croatia) are located in Dubrovnik; a fact that shows the importance of Dubrovnik as a tourist location. Several kings, queens, princes and princesses, celebrities, presidents and high ranking diplomats visit every year. This includes the late Pope John Paul II, who was also an honorary citizen of the city of Dubrovnik.
The city has an interesting history with influences from the Ottomans and the Hapsburgs, and there are many fascinating things to see and do in Dubrovnik. During the Middle Ages, when it was called the Republic of Ragusa, it became the only eastern Adriatic city-state to rival Venice. Ragusa was one of the centres where the Croatian language and literature developed. It was also home to several famous poets, painters, physicists, and other scholars. Historical attractions still remaining include the magnificently preserved medieval walls, churches, monasteries and palaces.
When you first see Dubrovnik's main street you will feel like taking off your shoes and slipping down it in your bare feet or even sliding down it, belly first! The Stradun, as the street is called, is made of polished stone and shines so much that you can see your face in it. A number of Dubrovnik hotels, Dubrovnik restaurants and shops in Dubrovnik are along, or just off, the Stradun. However, the majority of the hotels in Dubrovnik are in the surrounding hillside, many with spectacular views of the old town. You can even use our Dubrovnik map to choose a hotel in Dubrovnik based on its location. Besides being a well known tourist resort with a number of great Dubrovnik hotels, it is also the centre of the Dubrovnik-Neretva county and a sea port.
Dubrovnik citizens are cheerful and exhibit the typical nonchalant Mediterranean outlook. They are filled with pride for their city and its cultural heritage and by nature are pleasant and polite. They try to be perfect hosts and are sure to make you feel welcome whilst staying in a local guesthouse or hotel in Dubrovnik. Taking a Dubrovnik tour to the smaller and lesser known Croatian villages offers a chance to connect even more with local people and participate in old Croatian traditions, such as the Asparagus and Cherry days, Marronfest and Truffle days.
The 45-day Summer Festival, which is held from mid July to late August, is the highlight of the cultural calendar in Dubrovnik. The main major buildings in the old town, including the Sponza Palace and the Rector's Palace, change into festival venues where theatre, dance, classical music and visual arts are performed. The main feature is the traditional Shakespearean drama at the Lovrijenac Fortress. Even Serb shelling could not stop a production of Hamlet during the siege! There are regular shows and cultural performances at the Rector's Palace, the Church of our Saviour on the Stradun and the Martin Drýiæ Theater by the Rector's Palace throughout the rest of the year. Make sure you check out our range of Dubrovnik tours, offering plenty of things to see and do in Dubrovnik!
The local Lindo dance group are also known for their spirited traditional concerts. The Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra is reputed and performs regularly at various places. Tickets and information can be found at the venue, local tourist office and by advance booking with us! There is also a cinema near the Sponza Palace which shows Hollywood movies that are subtitled and not dubbed, as is usually the case.
The well-known Dubrovnik carnivals (from the Dubrovnik word "karnevo", a local adaptation of ‘carnival') have been held since the early Middle Ages, when they were brought from Italy. The third of February is another important day as it is the Feast Day of St. Blaise. This day is also known as the Day of Dubrovnik. The feast continues for a whole week and includes religious ceremonies, concerts, entertainment and carnival programs, sporting events as well as a procession that is taken through the town. During this week regular tours in Dubrovnik are organised.
